The Mexican Fisherman

Slowing down to live the life already here.

An American investment banker stood on the pier of a small coastal village in Mexico as a fisherman docked his modest boat filled with yellowfin tuna.

The banker admired the catch and asked how long it had taken.
“Only a little while,” said the fisherman.

When asked why he didn’t stay out longer to catch more, the fisherman smiled.
“I have enough to meet my family’s needs. I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siestas with my wife, stroll to the village each evening, sip wine, and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life.”

The banker laughed.
“If you fish longer, you could buy a bigger boat, then several boats, then a fleet. Eventually, you could own a cannery, move to the city, and run an empire. In twenty years you’ll be rich — a millionaire!”
“Millions?” asked the fisherman. “And then what?”
“Then,” said the banker, “you can retire to a small coastal village… sleep late, fish a little, play with your children, take siestas with your wife, and sip wine with your amigos.”

Reflection

The story invites reflection on what “enough” truly means.
The life so many chase already exists within reach, in moments of connection, stillness, and belonging.
Psychotherapy often becomes the pause that reveals such simplicity: a return to the rhythm of being rather than the pressure of doing.
